Installing Oracle Linux 8 Server on Oracle Virtual Box 7

In this note; I will show you how you can install Oracle Linux 8 server on Oracle VM 7. This server will be used for Oracle 21c Database in the subsequent notes.

For Oracle Linux 8 (OL8) installation, we first need to download the setup file that we will install. The process we will do is actually to download the ISO file required for installation, mount this file on an empty virtual machine and run the virtual machine.

The file required for virtual server setup is
https://yum.oracle.com/oracle-linux-isos.html
You can download from this website. I preferred version 8.7 for Oracle Linux 8 . If you want, you can also choose more advanced versions, the installation steps will usually be the same.
The file I chose is; OracleLinux-R8-U7-x86_64-dvd.iso.
After downloading the file; Let’s create our empty server. For this purpose, click New in the Machine main menu in Oracle VM.

In the window that appears, you can give the machine name. In Folder field; write the name of the folder that The OL8 server will be installed. Of course, giving meaningful names here will help you in the future. The important point on this screen is the file you choose as ISO Image. This file should be the ISO file you downloaded to install OL8. Select Linux as the Type and Oracle Linux (64bit) as the Version. The important point is Skip Unattended Installation box should be selected . Press the Next button with these selections.

In the hardware section; I will set up an Oracle database on this server, so enter the Base Memory part of 4096 MB.

Now we come to the disk part used by the server. Since an Oracle database will be installed on this server, some disk space is needed. Select Disk size 200 GB. This disk space will not be used immediately (as we did not select the Pre-allocate Full Size box). However, 200 GB of space is more than enough for our test needs, as it will be a little troublesome to enlarge the disk when disk needs are required in the future.

You can see the installation summary in the Summary section. Read this carefully and click the Finish button to complete the installation.

Our server is now ready. We will run the server for installation.
On the Oracle VM, the server is stopped. Since there are other servers in the VM environment I installed, you can see them as well. New server is marked with the arrow.

For the installation; right click the mouse on the server and select start in the menu.

The machine started to work and started the installation by reading the ISO file. In the window that appears for the server installation, select Install Oracle 8.7.0 and press enter.

After choosing languages for the installation. The server can be configured like below.

In LOCALIZATION section
By pressing the Keyboard area; I choose Turkish ( my mother tongue 🙂 )
Do not change the Language Support field.
Select Istanbul on the map that appears in the Time & Date field.
In the SOFTWARE section
Installation Source: Local Media
Software Selection: It should be Server with GUI.
in SYSTEM
Just click on Installation Destination and press Done. We chose the Disk size as 200 GB.
Do not change the Security Policy section
In the USER SETTINGS section
Enter the Root Password section; Set the root user password.
When you do all these, the Begin Installation button will become active. Start the installation by pressing this button.

Thus, the installation begins. The installation process will take some time. Your waiting time will vary depending on your computer’s resources. At the end of the installation Reboot System button will be activated. Press it and finish the installation
